Kitchener Eyecare, formerly MacKenzie Heslip Eyecare, is the oldest continuing optometry practice in Waterloo region. Your vision exam concludes with a consultation on any corrective measures we can take to improve your vision, and the glasses you choose are made here, in our own lab.

A full-scope eye health and vision examination that finishes with a consultation on any corrective measures we can take to improve your vision, from prescription glasses to contact lenses.
Eye health and disease management
Glaucoma evaluations, eye disease diagnosis and management, dry eye therapy, myopia control and eye strain. We use leading ocular assessment technologies, including optical coherence tomography (OCT), to assess your eye health.
Specialty care and co-management
Computer vision syndrome treatment, plus LASIK laser vision correction surgery evaluations and co-management with your surgeon.
Glasses and lenses
Prescription glasses, made onsite
Full-service optical dispensing with an onsite edging lab, so your prescription is filled quickly with high-quality, warranteed service. Having the lab here helps us control quality, reduce your costs and get you into your new glasses sooner.
Contact lenses and expert fittings
Expert fittings, first-time training, refills and specialty contact lens services, including Ortho-K and scleral fittings for harder-to-fit eyes.
Frames, sunglasses and specialty eyewear
An optical gallery curated from leading brands and unique frame designers across a Good-Better-Best range, including Tom Ford, Kate Spade, BOSS, Ray-Ban and Pit Viper. Prescription and non-prescription sunglasses, plus prescription swim and ski goggles.

The clinic runs to 7pm on Monday and Tuesday and opens at 8am on Thursday and Friday, with convenient parking at the door on Victoria Street North.

Optometry services are available in Spanish. Dr. Shanahan is proficient in Spanish and welcomes open, direct communication with patients by text, email or phone.

Meet your eye doctors.
Both of our optometrists are University of Waterloo graduates, members of the Ontario and Canadian Associations of Optometry, and certified in the treatment and management of ocular disease.
Dr. Mary-Jo Shanahan
Optometrist, ODDr. Shanahan knew she wanted to be an optometrist in third grade, when she was prescribed her first pair of glasses. She graduated from the University of Waterloo with a Doctor of Optometry degree (Honours) in 2008 and practised in Toronto for several years before returning to her hometown of Kitchener. She has travelled to Ecuador with an eyecare team to provide services in an impoverished region.
Dr. Ethan Wohlgemuth
Optometrist, ODA graduate of the University of Waterloo School of Optometry and Vision Science, where he received the General Proficiency and J.C. Thompson Memorial Awards, Dr. Wohlgemuth completed a residency at Northeastern State University Oklahoma College of Optometry managing complex ocular disease and performing in-office optometric surgical and laser procedures. He is a clinical instructor at the University of Waterloo's Ocular Health clinic, has lectured and published on ocular disease, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and the Canadian College of Specialties in Optometry.
